Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, evenings and weekends as needed.


Job Summary: The Executive Director of the Counseling Center is responsible for direct psychological service delivery and the management of all aspects of the department.


Additional Department Summary: The Executive Director has comprehensive responsibility for establishing and maintaining the overall mission and vision of the department consistent with the mission of the Division and University. This position is responsible for providing clinical, fiscal, training, and leadership in overseeing, guiding, and managing the day-to-day operations of the Counseling Center and overall delivery of effective counseling services focused on the improvement of the emotional health and wellbeing of the student body. The Executive Director is also responsible for all supervisory authority in the department, including recruitment, hiring, training, professional development, and evaluation of professional and support staff, as well as any disciplinary actions. The Executive Director is additionally responsible for holding staff accountable for completion of required training.

The Executive Director manages the operational budget and sets priorities for resource utilization, directs clinical and consultative services, including crisis intervention, outreach, and consultation with students, faculty and staff. This position is directly responsible for the knowledge of and maintenance of accreditation standards of the International Association of Counseling Services. In addition, the Executive Director leads the Counseling Center in the strategic planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and continual improvement of comprehensive mental health initiatives and has personal accountability for financial reporting and responsibility for establishing, enforcing, and following internal processes and controls as outlined in UA policies and procedures. In addition to University and Division policies, the Executive Director is guided by the policies and procedures set forth in the Counseling Center Policy and Procedures manual, and by relevant codes of ethics and federal and state law.

This position is also responsible for providing direct clinical services as well as planning and implementing an effective psychological service delivery system. The Executive Director keeps abreast of student needs and trends in mental health care, as well as evolving standards and treatment methods in the profession. The Executive Director ensures the department functions efficiently and in accordance with standards of mental health practice and accreditation standards.

The Executive Director is responsible for completing required training that is related to laws and regulations, that creates a more hospitable and respectful workplace; and safer work environment.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or Psy.D. degree in counseling psychology or clinical psychology and at least five (5) years of practice in a clinical setting, preferably in a university or college environment. Must be licensed as a Psychologist in the State of Alabama or license-eligible and attain licensure within one year of employment.


Skills and Knowledge: Knowledge of counseling center accreditation standards and practicum or internship training programs. Knowledge of state and national codes of ethics for mental health professionals.


Preferred Qualifications: Experience in a college or university counseling center setting is highly preferable with demonstrated increased areas of responsibility concomitant to years of experience. Knowledge of counseling center accreditation standards and practicum or internship training programs.
