Job Summary: The Deputy CIO has overall responsibility for the campus-wide information technology infrastructure and services and will provide leadership and direction to designated IT areas.


Additional Department Summary: This position reports directly to the Vice Provost for IT and CIO and will provide leadership and direction to the following IT areas: data center operations, telecommunications, system administration, networking, research computing, project management, enterprise application support, and OIT operations. The individual will manage spending for infrastructure, software, and services in coordination with the OIT business office. In addition, the selected candidate will be responsible for a high-quality, reliable and secure technical infrastructure and services with 24x7x365 support. This position will work closely with the IT executive staff and decision makers in other departments across the campus to identify, recommend, develop, implement and support cost-effective technology solutions for all aspects of the organization. The individual will be required to assist in leading strategic planning for all of OIT and developing initiatives, methodologies and road maps for continuous improvement to performance, capacity and availability management. The position requires that the individual be responsible for implementing an integrated structure for academic and administrative computing, and for providing vision, leadership, strategic planning and coordination of information technology, media, networking, and telecommunications at the University. The individual works closely with central and campus-based technology professionals and academic and administrative advisory groups to develop the strategy and planning for technology resources and infrastructure throughout the University. The individual provides leadership, guidance, and monitoring for IT projects. This position also promotes the research mission through active engagement with the UA research community and the creative application of IT services and support to research activities. The individual assists with development of action plans and responses to IT audits. The individual reviews proposed new solutions for appropriateness and fit into the UA technology portfolio. The position develops and advances IT policies, standards and processes. The individual performs employee management and reviews for direct reports and ensures indirect reports are being properly managed and administered. The position ensures employee development and certification activities for technical employees are being achieved. The position monitors planned change activities and ensures change management reviews are performed. The position is responsible for managing vendor relationships with key technology providers and develops, reviews, and coordinates the selection of solution providers via approved procurement practices including RFPs.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Management, or Business Administration and ten (10) years of experience in a technology environment with demonstrated progressive responsibilities with at least seven years of experience in a management capacity. The area of focus may be technological or administrative, although demonstrated abilities and a successful track record in these areas may be considered.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier.


Preferred Qualifications: Leadership, vision, and broad technical knowledge relative to media, computing and communications-related areas are required. Candidate must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, budget and finance experience, and the ability to manage diverse groups of people providing technology support for the University community. The successful candidate will be able to articulate a vision beyond the confines of the traditional compartmentalized role of an information technology expert. ITIL or similar certifications or formal training and experience in IT operations and service delivery across a diverse constituency. The individual must be experienced in an enterprise wide infrastructure to include a mixture of UNIX and Wintel services support. A broad range of knowledge about project management, hardware, operating systems, networks, disaster recovery planning, technology sourcing, procurement processes, vendor relationship management, and personnel management is of importance.
