Job Summary: The Radio System Technician assists the Radio System Administrator in providing reliable, state of the art communications to all public safety agencies utilizing the 700 MHz Trunked Radio System.


Additional Department Summary: Responsibilities include the operation, management and maintenance of a Motorola P25 Phase II 700 MHz Simulcast/ Multicast Trunked Radio System, the programming, repair and maintenance of portable, mobile and base station radios, microwave radios, data devices, dispatch consoles and local area networking devices for The University of Alabama Division of Public Safety. The Radio System Technician primarily serves the University Division of Public Safety, and also serves to assist other campus departments and divisions maintain their independent UHF and VHF radio systems and equipment. This position also maintains interoperable system interfaces to other local radio systems of adjoining jurisdictions of the University Police.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Completion of a two-year program in communications electronics; OR AAS or AS degree in electronics or closely related field; OR the equivalent military radio/radar training; OR two (2) years of experience working as a radio system technician maintaining an APCO25 and/or DMR radio system


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Thorough knowledge and understanding of FCC Rules and Regulations Must be able to work outside normal work hours to include nights and/or weekends. Must be available for on-call and call-out after hours in the event of a critical system issue. Ability to lift up to 70 pounds, work in tight spaces, work both indoors and outdoors in variable weather conditions, climb ladders and work in high noise environments Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier. Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.


Preferred Qualifications: Motorola Certificate of Completion of Astro 25 Simulcast, Conventional, 7.x Trunked System, Gold Elite or MCC7000 Series Dispatch Consoles, Motorola Mototrbo Conventional, Capacity Plus Trunking, and MIP5000 Console courses Experience maintaining NICE Logging recorders Experience maintaining Mototrbo or DMR Radio Systems Completion of FEMA ICS100, ICS200, ICS700, ICS800, COM-T Courses Experience in emergency and disaster communications
